Must understand and use the basic functions of computer (Turning on/off, accessing programs, internet searches, saving/closing of files).Must be able to communicate clearly and using correct grammar both verbally and in writing using English.Must be enthusiastic about breastfeeding and wants to help families enjoy a positive experience.Must have experience breastfeeding at least (1) baby for (6) months consecutively is required.High school graduate or equivalent is required.Must have access to reliable transportation.Be available to work 14-29 hours per week.Must be available for new mothers experiencing breastfeeding issues outside standard office hours.Must have the ability to hear and speak face to face, over telephone or in virtual meetings.

Must have manual dexterity to use office equipment including but not limited to a copier, computer key board, or phone key pad.Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without material handling equipment.Must be able to sit a table or desk for long periods of time with occasional standing, stooping walking, squatting or reaching.Must be able to work for long periods of time while maintaining concentrated attention to detail.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS: Works within the policies and procedures of the WIC program and follows scope of practice from Loving Support guidelines.Other duties as assigned by Program Coordinator, Clinic Supervisor, Clinic Coordinator, Program Manager or Administration.Occasional travel by car, bus, airplane or train may be required as associated with attendance at conferences, meeting and other duties.Travels to other SCF WIC sites as needed.May assist WIC staff in promoting breastfeeding peer counseling through special projects.Attends meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as necessary.Attends and assists WIC prenatal classes and breastfeeding support groups.Attends mandatory state training (4) times per year for ongoing education.Obtains breastfeeding peer counselor certification (Loving Support State Certification) within 3 months of hire date and maintain for duration of employment.Respects and maintains each WIC mother by keeping her information strictly confidential.Refers mothers needing additional support to WIC Nutritionist, WIC IBCLC (International Board-Certified Lactation Counselor), WIC Breastfeed Coordinator, Lactation Consultant, mother’s physician or nurse, public health programs in the Las Vegas community or social services agencies according to agency established protocols.Keeps and maintains accurate records of all contacts made with assigned WIC mothers including data entry functions as necessary to keep files up-to-date.Makes routine periodic contacts with all WIC mothers assigned to the position’s caseload.Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by Smartphone, office telephone, and in-person at the WIC clinics as needed.Helps WIC mothers prevent and handle common breastfeeding concerns.Provides basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, including benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers and getting a good start with breastfeeding.RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES (including but not limited to): A WIC Peer Counselor is a paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Under the supervision of the WIC Breastfeeding Coordinator, the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor performs in accordance with established guidelines.
